US National Security Advisor Susan Rice shakes hands with the Chinese President in Beijing.

At this afternoon’s meeting at the Great Hall of the People, Mr. Xi told Ms. Rice that the two countries need to promote negotiations on multilateral investment agreements and resolve controversial regional issues, China News Agency reported.

Ms. Rice talked about the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II that China plans to hold next week, with the highlight being the military parade on September 3 at Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

Mr. Xi is expected to arrive in the US at the end of September, on a state visit.

During the meeting with Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission Pham Truong Long, Ms. Rice did not mention the East Sea but chose to emphasize areas of cooperation between the two countries’ militaries.

Before meeting with General Pham, Ms. Rice this morning met with Mr. Yang Jiechi, Member of the State Council, former Chinese Foreign Minister.

`At the same time, we had an honest discussion about our differences, which we both recognized needed to be resolved effectively,` Ms. Rice said.

China’s Foreign Ministry said Mr. Yang urged the US and China to build `a new type of relationship between great powers`.
