The first former president in the 21st century is Josep Nunez – who led Barca for 22 years, from 1978 to 2000.

Nunez and his son bribed tax inspectors for nearly a million euros to stop declaring 13.1 million euros in Barca’s taxes for the period 1991-1999.

The second former Barca president to be arrested was Sandro Rosell on May 23, 2017, for money laundering and paying `kickbacks` to take over the television rights of the Brazilian team’s matches.

On April 24, 2019, after 643 days of detention, Rosell was acquitted by the court.

Rosell had to resign because of embezzlement of money in the Neymar transfer.

On the morning of March 1, it was former president Josep Maria Bartomeu’s turn to be arrested for his involvement in the Barcagate dirty media campaign, targeting Barca players, former players and presidential candidates.

Bartomeu was arrested along with former leaders under him including CEO Oscar Grau, head of legal department Roman Gomez Ponti and advisor Jaume Masferrer.

Nunez’s successor – Joan Gaspart – had been a highly regarded vice president under Nunez.

Barca has another president this century, which is Enric Reyna.

In that presidential election, Joan Laporta did not start out as a strong candidate.
