Pakistan suddenly fired artillery across the Line of Control (LoC) in the Nowgam area on the morning of October 1, killing two Indian soldiers and injuring four others, Indian army spokesman Rajesh Kalia said in a statement.

Kalia said Indian soldiers `responded strongly to enemy fire`.

Shootings and artillery battles regularly erupt along the LoC, the boundary dividing the territories of Kashmir controlled by India and Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said on October 1 that it had summoned senior Indian diplomats in Islamabad to protest the violations of the ceasefire on September 30, which injured a 65-year-old civilian in Jandrot.

A day earlier, Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesman Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri accused India of escalating tensions along the LoC to `divert the world’s attention from human rights violations in Indian-occupied Kashmir`.

India accuses the Pakistani army of often opening fire to `help gunmen sneak across the LoC to join the insurgency` in Kashmir, which has lasted for decades.
