When Hurricane Irma made landfall in the state of Florida, USA on September 10, the Florida Keys, a coral archipelago stretching more than 190 km, located off the southern coast, became the place to absorb the full force of the storm with gusts of wind.

`Basically every home on the Keys was affected,` said FEMA official Brock Long, adding 65 percent of homes here were severely damaged.

`This is going to be very difficult for people who are returning home,` said Petrona Hernandez, a resident of the Florida Keys island who said the 30-foot-tall concrete wall protected his home from destruction

Rescuers began to mobilize to the Florida Keys to provide food and water.

People elsewhere in the state of Florida are trying to return to normal life little by little.

The power grid is gradually being restored, but currently nearly half of Florida’s population still has to live in the dark.

About 110,000 people are still stuck in shelters across the state.

`We have a lot of work to do, but everyone will unite,` Florida Governor Rick Scott encouraged people.

About 13% of the Keys population is classified as poor and will face greater hardship.

`Maids, bus drivers, hotel cleaners, cooks and dishwashers already have to make ends meet, now life will be even more difficult for them,` Stephanie Kaple, leader of the organization
