The number was given by Barbara Ferrer, director of the Los Angeles Public Health Agency, in a statement yesterday, when warning about the rising number of infections and deaths from Covid-19 here.

According to a report on December 25, this county has about 6,500 people hospitalized with Covid-19, 20% of whom are in the intensive care unit (ICU).

California reported 351 additional deaths on December 25, the third highest daily increase ever, bringing the total death toll to more than 23,600.

`Hospitals are full, there are very few ICU beds left, people are dying,` Mr. Ghaly said.

America has just celebrated Christmas in the context of recording more than 18.7 million Covid-19 cases, including nearly 330,000 deaths.

The US has ordered an additional 100 million doses of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine and the goods are expected to be delivered before July 31, 2021, bringing the total number of Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine doses purchased by the country to 200 million, with a contract value of nearly 4 billion USD.

By December 23, more than one million Americans had received the first vaccine shot.
