The US airstrike on a convoy near Baghdad airport, Iraq early on the morning of January 3 killed Iranian Quds special forces commander Qassem Soleimani and Iraqi militia commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

Iraq, a country allied with the US in the Middle East, criticized the US airstrike on its territory as `an act of aggression against the country, government and people of Iraq`.

Syria strongly condemned and called the US airstrike an `immoral act of aggression`, warning that the situation in the area was `dangerously escalating`.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu shortened his visit to Greece and returned to the country to monitor the situation after the airstrike.

Leader of Israel’s Blue and White opposition party Yair Lapid said General Soleimani’s death `is what he deserves`.

The Russian Foreign Ministry expressed concern after the airstrike that killed General Soleimani.

Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Russian Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev said the US airstrike was a mistake that `extinguished the last hope of saving the nuclear agreement with Iran` and could have consequences.

China expressed concern and `urged all parties, especially the US, to calm down and exercise restraint,` Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a press conference in Beijing on January 3.

France was the first European country to speak out about the airstrike that killed General Suleimani.

Montchalin said urgent mediation efforts were underway.

The British government urged all sides to be cautious and said `escalating conflict is not in our interests`.

Germany said the situation in the Middle East `escalated dangerously` and called for resolving conflicts in the region through diplomatic means.
